Clara Wilkinson painting a botanical mural for Elixir Design at the Regency Rooms, Brighton

Here are work in progress shots of my recent botanical mural which I was commissioned to paint for the new Beauty Secrets salon in Hove. I began with my illustrations as a starting point and gradually built up the design using a pencil to draw in the leaf shapes. A mural's life begins with the brief. I try to obtain as much information as possible taking photos of the wall, measurements and an idea of colours and theme the client has in mind. (The Living Wall Murals book ' Making Murals ' published by David and Charles has a chapter all about the design stage if you need more help.) Bringing cool greens and large foliage shapes to a courtyard garden near the seaside in Hove, this design brief was all about creating an oasis in the city. I used a single colour for each section of the mural creating simple organic abstract shapes. As with most of my murals I paint free hand - treating the wall like one of my giant canvases , rarely scaling up. My favourite paints of the summer by Little Green Paint Company were fabulous for this project. August 2025.
